Montresor is a calculating unexpected murderer. Unlike, say a man coming at you with a knife, Montresor lures Fortunato into the tombs using his ego and vanity as bait. Poe has given Montresor a compartmentalized personality. By day, he moves in society, while planning a most heinous murder, by night, he becomes a cruel, heartless killer.
Even as he tells the story many years later, he still lacks remorse for his deeds. Montresor believes that he did the right thing by walling up Fortunato in the tomb. His actions were an act of revenge for grievances, never disclosed, by Fortunato, that had a negative life altering effect on Montresor.
"Montresor's coldness sets him apart from many murderous characters and many Poe protagonists.
"This lack of feeling made Poe's early readers uncomfortable, and led some to accuse Poe of immorality in creating such a character."
