The whole play is a farce, and Mr. Wopsle becomes the object of the audience's ridicule. Mr. Wopsle is the only person on stage or in the audience who takes the play seriously. Rather than being a tragedy, the play turns into a comedy, and the audience laughs hysterically all the way through it. Pip and Herbert try to applaud for Mr. Wopsle, but they soon join the remainder of the audience in riotous laughter. When Mr. Wopsle is called out on stage after the play, the audience makes derogatory sounds and boos his performance.
